Public Library New York has one of the largest collections of engravings of military uniforms in the world. Legacies of the Dutch physician Vinkhuijzen Hendrick Jacobus (1843-1910), the collection consists of more than 32,000 illustrations of many sources, mounted in 762 albums, which, today, we can display digitally.


Dr. Vinkhuijzen led a troubled life, often linked to military settings, beginning to practice their profession in the Royal Corps of handles of the Dutch army in The Hague, and later served in France in an ambulance newly founded Red Cross during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). He traveled to Russia, where he remained in Moscow studying remedies against the plague, and finally ended his career being the medical officer of the court of Prince Alexander of the Netherlands.



Great collector Vinkhuijzen dedicated his life to collect pictures and engravings of military uniforms of armies around the world with an aesthetic quality varied. In his collection can be found cutting book illustrations of manners of the seventeenth century with nineteenth century chromolithographs, original watercolors by some artistic merit, pencil drawings, and even occasional photographs. The color of some of images printed in black and white is his work, like that of some of the watercolors unsigned.



Regarding the English army, 1400 Dutch physician met Art, available in 34 folders that include consistency from 500 to 1900. The sources are the most diverse, finding blades for album Count of Clonard infantry and cavalry, recorded by Daniel Vierge, Jiménez y Villegas illustrations, color drawings of the albums of the Carlist troops from North and Army Cabrera, among many other things, all this is mixed with many illustrations of German and French (Knotel, hedgehogs, etc.)..


Vinkhuijzen drawings organized his collection as loose in boxes according to their own classification system, bone and period of time, this organization is maintained for navigating the digital library the New York Public Library, which, in its reference to the English army, here are the link.
